Welcome!

Thank you for coming to my newly designed site — it is an honor to have you here.  Nicholas Young is my web designer and is bringing me kicking and screaming into the 21st century –  I owe him a great deal of thanks.  I hope to be more accesible and to “get to know” all of you who come to this site.

  • I was a music ed major at the U of Alabama back in the early 70's and looked down on Bluegrass until a buddy took me to a place just outside Homewood to hear 3 On A String.

I'm now a snoopervisor of Music for a school district just outside Philadelphia, PA. I also coordinate the art teachers (well, I married a watercolor artist so that qualifies me). An art teacher was just in my office showing me a project she is doing with her students regarding Lewis & Clark and she had a CD with your music. Cool! You converted me way back in the 70's and I've enjoyed your contribution to the Ken Burn's stuff.

    Best Wishes

Thank you Mr. Baxter so much -- your kind comments made my day! I was very
close to being a music major (trumpet), but did not because I did not want
to be a band director -- I really disliked marching season!!! I would have
enjoyed a job in the arts like yours. Best Wishes to you and your wife. B

    Greetings, Mr. Horton

This past Christmas, we presented to our children three of your CD's. We are all greatly enjoying your music.

Our son (age 9) has expressed an interest in learning the harmonica. Due to our family's interest in the history of the Civil War, he has also expressed an interest in the music of that era. Would you be so kind as to recommend a Civil War Harmonica Music book? Also, could you recommend a specific Harmonica for beginners?
  • bobbyhorton
    Hi Rebecca,
It always makes me happy to hear of children enjoying these old tune -- Thank you so much for letting me know. I do not know of a book of Civil War harmonica arrangements. I would like to suggest your going to the web site for Mel Bay Publications, or Oak Publications and find a book (and maybe DVD) for beginners to learn the techniques of playing. Then search for two different songbooks that I think are still in print: "Singing Soldiers" by Paul Glass and Louis C. Singer; and "Ballads and Songs of the Civil War" by Jerry Silverman (Mel Bay Publications). He can learn the tunes and apply them (by ear) to the harmonica. I think he will really enjoy this process. If there is a harmonica teacher in your area? If so, this would be the best route for your son. Good luck with your harmonica quest!

    Greetings, Mr. Horton

Thank you so much for your helpful response. We will look into the music books which you suggested.

    Blessings to You and Yours,

    Greetings,

I am a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Society of the Lees of Virginia. In researching my Lee ancestors I found written one of R.E. Lee's favorite tunes was "When Swallows Homeward Fly". I own all of your CD's, except Songs of the Union Army, and have not heard you record it. Are you familar with this tune/words or where I might find the words?

I thank you in advance for your response to this request and please keep performing!

    Have a Blessed New Year!

    Amaleer
  • bobbyhorton
    Dear Ms. Howard,
Thank you for contacting me. I have not recorded "When The Swallows
Homeward Fly" but I do have the song in an old songbook. If you will send
me your address, I will send you a photo copy.
    Happy New Year!!
    Bobby

My Chapter will be celebrating Lee, Jackson, Maury Day on January 18. From your years of research can you offer any titles of other songs favored by these men? We are familar with Lee's fondness of "How Firm a Foundation", and Jackson's hymn "Show Pity Lord".

Thank so very much again, you are most gracious. I look forward to a copy of the lyrics to read as a poem.

    Warm regards,

    Amaleer

Excellent time at Local Color last night. We sat in the very back and soaked it all in. Thanks for the fantastic Christmas show. It was a very special time for my wife and me. The wife said I did not smile and clap enough but I was so focused on your music that I did not realize that I did not appear to be "festive"! Oh, but I was within! Merry Christmas, Mr. Horton!
  • bobbyhorton
    Hello Robin,
I thank you for coming to Local Color for the Christmas Show -- I had a lot
of fun myself and really enjoyed being with all the kind folks who were
    there!!
Happy New Year to you all,
    Bobby
  • Mark
    Bobby,
I live in Virginia. You should really think about doing some events on the East Coast. in 2008 I bought your "Christmas" CD. Every year at Christmas time its playing in our minivan. I am a guitarist and musician and I have to say your choice of instrumentation for the songs was PERFECT. I would not have changed a thing.
  • bobbyhorton
    Greetings Mark,
I really do appreciate your taking the time to write to me -- and I thank
you for your very kind words!! I have not played in Virginia in a while and
would very much like to come back. I will post any Va trips in the future
(unless the function is private). I am so pleased to know you like the
Christmas album -- I do love Christmas songs and it was fun playing these
tunes on old timey instruments. My best to you and your family in the new
    year!

I would love to have the sheet music for violin for the National Park series. Just beautiful. Can this be done?
  • Russ Lyon
    Dear Bobby,

Getting to know and really appreciate your music. Thank you for your wonderful contributions to the National Parks series. I play acoustic guitar (Martin D-18) and my daughter is a budding young violinist. Would love to know where I might find sheet music for "The Shores of Ogygia." I can figure out the guitar part by ear but she's one of those who has to have the notes.
  • evan
did you ever get a response, or find a source of sheet music for "The Shores of Ogygia"? I too would also like to find this and can't seem to do so.
  • bobbyhorton
    Dear Evan,
Please contact me at <bobby@bobbyhorton.com> and I will send you a lead
    sheet with chords. B

Welcome to the 21st century, even if arriving with kicks and screams! I appreciate your webtool so that I could easily contact you! I have the pleasure of working as media specialist at Vestavia Hills Elementary School Central, the 4th and 5th grade school in your neighborhood. Would you be interested in working together to plan an event to celebrate music of the Civil War with 4th graders at Vestavia Central? I understand they'll be studying the Civil War in February, and I'll love to bring your music into their appreciation of the experience. You may contact me at the email address below, or the old-fashioned way by calling me at 402-5310, if you are interested in pursuing this event with us.

Thank you (and by the way, I loved your "National Parks" pieces -- wow!)
  • mimigeibel
    Dear Bobby,
I hope you don't mind, we played your love tune "Land at Rest" at our open mic last night up here in the Seattle area. My partner fell so in love with this melody that he videotaped the "National Parks" show and listened to the tune over and over......and over and over until he could come up with what we hope is a reasonably close version. We did a fairly simple arrangement with octave mandolin and autoharp. Before we get too far in arranging it for ourselves, I'd like to ask you if this is your composed tune or a traditional tune that has your lovely arrangement? Do I hear an extra measure at the end of the B part? Out of all the pretty tunes on the National Parks soundtrack, "Land at Rest" just grabbed our hearts and called out "Play me, play me"! Thanks ever so much.
  • bobbyhorton
Thank you Mimie -- I am proud to know you played "Land of Rest". Thank you
    for your kind words.

    Hello Bobby,
Welcome to the 21st Century. When I started watching the parks series, one of the first things I recognized was you playing in the background. I have been to a few of the parks but mostly stick to the Smokies and the place I have in Pigeon Forge. I am still waiting for your "Irish" CD, but you are a busy fellow. I don'k know how you get so much stuff done. Keep it up.
  • bobbyhorton
Thanks Robert. I appreciate your getting to me. When I was a kid growing up in Birmingham, your family either went to the beach or to the mountains for vacation -- my family went to the mountains so I fell in love with The Smokys and the music of the region at a very early age. There is a very strong Irish and Scot influence on the great music of that area.
    Kindest Regards -- Bobby
  • Marilyn Isaminger
Wonderful article in Sunday's paper - I have sent to folks all over the country, including a couple who are both National Park employees in Saugus, Massachusetts. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the new documentary and encouraging friends to tune in!
from-Marilyn and Jim Isaminger - better known as Reagan Bush's aunt and uncle
  • bobbyhorton
Thank you Marilyn (and Jim). I think you will like Ken's film -- the story of our Parks is compelling and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous!!! The Florentine Films people are amazing. Bobby
  • Jay Brock
    Bobby,
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you (and hearing) at the Leeds Street Festival last weekend. It was great to talk with Linda also. My wife would like to have any music you might know of or have relating to the underground railroad. Each year for the last 8 years she has given a history lesson pertaining to the underground railroad for the elementary school where our youngest daughter teaches in Jackson, Mississippi. She also would light for you to suggest to Ken Burns he might consider a documentary on the subject. Let me know if you have anything.
  • Sean
    Hello Bobby,

You've probably grown weary of hearing this, but I wanted to congratulate you on your superlative interpretation of "Dixie", as performed on the Civil War CD, which is unparalleled in my opinion!

Is there any chance that I could purchase your transcription/arrangement of this tune for solo guitar? I've worked out some of it by ear, but my ear isn't that great, and I'd appreciate your help.

    ~Sean
  • bobbyhorton
Sean -- I really appreciate your kind comments. I have a list of folks who want me to sketch-out the way I played Dixie. I intend to do so when I get time. I'll post it when it's available. Thank you so much! Bobby
  • Sean
Thanks Bobby, that gives me something to look forward to. Can I ask what guitar you used for that performance? Was it the one pictured on this site? It has such a fine tonal quality to it.

    ~Sean
  • bobbyhorton
    Sean,
I use four acoustic guitars when I am recording: The Model 24 (circa 1857)
Martin that is in the picture; A lot of the work I do for the Florentine
folks is a Washburn (circa 1884); I also play a dreadnaught guitar built
for me by my friend and great craftsman, Harry Coleman (circa 1975); and a
hand built Kazuo Yairi classical guitar (circa 1970) -- The Yairi is the
guitar I used when I recorded "Dixie" way back when. Thank you so much for
    your interest.
    Bobby

Great to have a place to keep up with you, Bobby. Angela and I have both become a fan on Facebook, but it's nice to find this web address as well. I sent a note to Lynda ... it was great to see the photo of she and the grandbaby!! Do you know, you are STILL one of Angela's favorite people in the whole wide world ... and believe me, she's visited a big chunk of it!!

I've been looking for a banjo teacher. We live outside of Springville, AL and are trying to avoid driving into Birmingham. Wanted to ask if you knew of a teacher in our area? They seem to be hard to come by. We know about Herb Trotman and have spoken with him, but haven't given up yet on finding one closer. Thought you were worth a try! Thanks.
  • bobbyhorton
Hello Sherri -- I have an idea and will send you an email. Regards, Bobby
